In 1601, England’s Parliament enacted The Statute of Charitable Uses (43 Eliz I, c.4), sometimes known as the Statute of Elizabeth I. The preamble to the statute contained a list of purposes and activities considered to be charitable in nature. This list is generally thought to form the foundation for modern charity law — with some modern adjustments, certainly.

Our name is a tribute to this history.
